About the Session:

Four major topics to be covered in training sessions:

  1. The three levels of testing and how they differ.
  2. The role of each level in educational assessment.
  3. The principles of standardized testing:
    • Provincial, national and international standards
    • Ethical test selection and use
    • Understanding measurement statistics
    • Understanding T-scores, z-scores, percentile rank equivalents, age equivalents
    • How to compare standard scores
    • Interpreting test scores to parents, teachers and children
  4. Pragmatic issues in test administration:
    • Choosing standardized tests
    • Establishing basals and ceilings
    • Scoring standardized tests with precision
    • Meeting District and Alberta Education guidelines
About the Presenter(s):
Dr. David Carter

Dr. Dave Carter has been an educator for 30 years, having worked as a Grade 6 and 7 Teacher, a Learning Assistance Teacher for grades K-7, a School Psychologist for Grades K-12, Director of Instruction (Student Support Services) in Central Okanagan School District #23, and most recently Director of Instruction (Student Support Services) in Surrey School District #36. Dave ‘semi retired' in 2005, and teaches courses for UBC, SFU, does psycho-educational evaluations, and consults to the B.C. Ministry of Education and the Attorney General of B.C.

Cancellation Policy:

Request for cancellation or refund must be received in writing (fax/email) at the CARC office a minimum of 7 FULL days prior to the event start, or registration fees will apply and refunds will not be issued. If you are unable to attend a session and unable to provide seven FULL days’ notice, please feel free to delegate an alternate to attend in your place. CARC also reserves the right to cancel an event within the 7 calendar days due to unforeseen circumstances such as facility closures, terrorist threats, natural disasters or extreme inclement weather (-35 C or colder). Cancellation notices should be sent to npenney@carcpd.ab.ca.
