Building number sense is the basis to success in math. Strong number sense is the ability to reason, think flexibly and understand relationships between numbers. Students need to regularly interact with numbers and to have an opportunity to play with them. Number sense allows mathematics to become about understanding how numbers work versus memorizing sets of rules in order to build fluency.
