TARGET AUDIENCE: K-12 SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND DISTRICT LEADS/COACHES ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND
Suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour can be distressing for everyone involved in the life of a child or adolescent presenting with this concern, including school staff. This presentation provides an overview of the School-based Suicidal Ideation Response Protocol. This protocol outlines evidence-informed step-by-step instructions for various school roles and aims to build capacity in schools to most approrpriately respond to suicidal ideation and suicide behaviour.
The protocol is available to schools across Alberta and is applicable for Kindergarten to Grade 12. Specific protocol components will be described including the four sections and related appendices (e.g. Suicidal Ideation Assessment Summary, Safety Plan Template, Information Transfer Form, Parent Information Sheet). Core compentencies for each role in the protocol will also be detailed and implementation resources will be highlighted, such as online training modules available through Mental Health Online Resource for Educators (MORE).
Time will be allotted for conversation related to the protocol’s development, implementation and the early experiences of schools using the protocol.
is a Senior Project Manager with Child and Adolescent Addiction, Mental Health and Psychiatry Program (CAAMHPP), Alberta Health Services – Calgary Zone. In her roll as Project Lead, she brought together various stakeholders to develop, review and collaborate in the development of the School-based Suicidal Ideation Response Protocol. Aleta’s 15 year career in social planning, health planning, evaluation and quality improvement informs her work across multiple systems.Chris Pawluk
is the Lead Psychologist for Rocky View Schools. He is responsible for enhancing the social-emotional, behavioural, and mental well being of all Rocky View students through supports to schools and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including 75 divisional staff in 54 schools for 25,000 students. Chris works closely with various Alberta universities to facilitate research and training of teachers, psychologists, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists. A Clinical Supervisor in the Werklund School of Education, Chris most recently taught a graduate level class on Advanced Clinical Supervision. Chris has worked on a number of collaborative education projects in three countries over the last 20 years.Deborah Hinds-Nunziata
has worked in schools as both a teacher and School Psychologist for over 30 years. She is currently the Student Services Coordinator for Golden Hills School Division. Within this role she enjoys the opportunity to work with system and community partners on a variety of initiatives including the Regional Collaborative Service Delivery, Success in Schools, Southern Alberta Student Threat Assessment Coalition and of course, the School-based Suicidal Ideation Response Protocol.
