About the Session:

Narrative
This workshop is geared for any teacher responsible for teaching narrative writing with a focus on grades 2-7.

Participants will:

  • understand the characteristics of a range of narrative types of stories: character/problem/solution, personal experience, imaginative, realistic fiction
  • explore the reading-writing connection
  • learn specific strategies for writing entertaining beginnings
  • write relevant, vivid elaborative detail
  • build suspense develop fully-elaborated main events
  • craft satisfying extended story endings
  • receive powerful exemplars of narrative writing for classroom use
  • address the personal experience narrative

About the Presenter(s):
Carla Thio

Carla is currently a master teacher at the Renert School. She has been a classroom teacher for 18 years in Calgary, Alberta. Her first experience with Empowering Writers was in her first year of teaching at Rundle College Society where she became the go-to person for teaching writing. Her students are proof that Empowering Writers yields success. Students arrive to her class excited to write but more
importantly confident in writing.

Carla has been a trainer with Empowering Writers since 2014.

Cancellation Policy:

Request for cancellation or refund must be received in writing (fax/email) at the CARC office a minimum of 7 FULL days prior to the event start, or registration fees will apply and refunds will not be issued. If you are unable to attend a session and unable to provide seven FULL days’ notice, please feel free to delegate an alternate to attend in your place. CARC also reserves the right to cancel an event within the 7 calendar days due to unforeseen circumstances such as facility closures, terrorist threats, natural disasters or extreme inclement weather (-35 C or colder). Cancellation notices should be sent to npenney@carcpd.ab.ca.
