About this Learning Opportunity
Join for one or more or all of these sesssions with an Autism specialist:
Day 1:Setting Students Up for Success
In this session we will talk about how we develop a positive relationship with students, how to set up an acknowledgement system (positive reinforcement), how to set up expectations in a way that are achievable for students, strategies to help motivate students in the classroom, and how to use visuals/language to support students to understand the expectations.
Day 2: Distressed Behaviours
In this session we will talk about how to take ABC data, how to support students who are experiencing distress, and strategies to teach coping strategies and new skills.
Day 3: Transitions & Participation
In this session we will talk about how to plan and support students through daily transitions. We will also talk about strategies to increase student participation in academic activities as well as building independence.
Day 4: Teaching New Skills
In this session we will talk about different ways to teach new skills: 1) Shaping; 2) Chaining; 3) Rule Setting; 4) Positive Reinforcement. We will also talk about how we can support students to promote learning and independence; and ways to get the student’s assent.

About the Facilitator
Lilian Saltel
Dr. Saltel is a Clinical Lead with The Centre for Autism Services Alberta. She has been working with autistic children since 2008 providing in-home and community support . She also works with schools providing behavioural consultation to support students who engage in distressed behaviours. She is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst and her practice is in accordance with the professional and ethical standards of her licensing board.
